Notes:
This pie chart above shows the distribution of the cost per insured, adding up to 64 cents.
The Hormone costs (HRT) are separated into cost for the medicines (HRT RX) and for the Doctors visits (HRT MD.)
Additionally, HRT costs are separated into Transition costs (the first 2 years) and Maintenance costs (years 3 and on.)
As you can see, the bulk of the cost is in the HRT Maintenance costs, after transition and surgery are complete (in green.)
Interestingly, most health plans already cover the maintenance costs, because once an insured is legally female, estrogens are covered and appropriate, and similarly for males and testosterone.
It's clear that at least half, and possibly more, of the total cost is already being covered by existing health plans, even those with a transgender exclusion clause.
